Beer Can Chicken
What is Beer Can Chicken? It is a bbq technique used to cook chickens where you place them on half empty (or half full) cans of beer. Beer can chicken has become a favorite of outdoor grilling every since people discovered that you can cook great chicken if you put a chicken on a can of beer or cola soda. It really is very simple. Just make sure the chicken is clean and trimmed of fat. This recipe is for a whole chicken and not chicken pieces.
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup of your favorite chicken spice rub
- A Whole chicken
- Beer can chicken rack or you can use just the can
- Cooking oil
Directions
- Be sure to clean the chicken
- Rub inside and out with about half the spice rub.
- You will need a can of beer.
- Pour out roughly half of it. Just removing the pop top is ok.
- Put the other half of your spice rub to the liquid in the can.
- Brush the inside of the chicken with cooking oil so that it is easy to remove.
- Place the chicken on top of the can of beer.
- You can use you smoker or your grill to cook the chicken but make sure that you use an indirect cooking method to roast the chicken.
- Stand the chicken up on the grill in the smoker/grill.
- Add a few water soaked wood chips to the hot coals to produce smoke if desired.
- The chicken is done when it reached an internal temperature of about 160 degrees (use your meat thermometer). At 250 to 275 degrees the cooking takes about an hour to an hour and a half.
- In the last 30 minutes of cooking you can use a barbeque to baste the bird.
- Allow the chicken to rest at least 15-20 minutes before serving.
